Acute Illness PLAN
For Ages 6 months and uP:
Start at the very first signs/symptoms of illness. The goal is to catch things early. You can also add more support when exposed — like when you know the flu is going around school or when someone else in the household is sick.
Core Support For ACUTe ILLNESSEs:
TLC and general support
Use humidifier while sleeping and during the day in play space/sleep space (be sure to clean as directed to prevent mold buildup)
Warming socks at night – Click here
Herbal chest rub- apply to chest as needed for congestion. Badger chest rub

Probiotics
double the dose
Elderberry syrup
increase the dose to ½ tsp 3x per day
Vitamin D
increase to 1000 iu per every 25 lbs of bodyweight for 7 days (ex a 50lb child can take 2000 iu per day), then reduce to maintenance dose.
Zinc
Choose picolinate or glycinate form. Can give for 2-4 weeks
Age 2-6: 5mg per day
Age 6-12: 10 mg per day
Age 12+: 15mg per day
Vitamin C
Do not give extra vitamin C when sick, Vitamin C is better for prevention and recovery. You can give Vitamin C BEFORE getting sick for prevention. You can also give it at the TAIL END of illness when symptoms are much improved (typically Day 5-7) to help support full recovery.
ACUTE SUPPORT: OPTIONAL ADD-ONS
Consider adding more if your child often has difficult getting over acute illnesses such as cold/flu, stays sicker longer than others in your family, or when they get sick, the symptoms are more severe
To determine doses use Young’s Rule – see end of this blog.
Immune System Stimulator Homeopathic Drops
Ages 12+: 10 drops 3x per day.
Under age 12: use Young’s rule to determine dosing based on age and weight.
My Favorite Herbal Tinctures (for Ages 1+):
Herbal Immunity by Wise Woman Herbs and Kid’s Immune Avenger by Herb Pharm
Give a dose 4x per day for 3-5 days. Then reduce the dose to twice daily and continue 2 doses per day until completely better for 3 days
The adult dose is 60 drops per dose, use Young’s rule to determine your child’s dose based on their age.
If giving this 4 times per day is not doable, you can double up the dose and give it 2 times per day. This is usually what I do with my kids. For example: If the dose is 20 drops 4x per day, you could give 40 drops 2x per day instead. At first onset of illness the frequent dosing is often most helpful, so if possible follow the 4x per day dosing.
For Ear infections:
Onion Ear Muffs
Cut a whole onion in half— Scoop out a couple inner layers to create a cup to surround the ear. Heat onion in oven (250 – 300 degrees) for approximately 15 minutes or until the onion is warmed and juices are visible on the surface. Wrap onion in a cheese cloth and allow onion to cool to a temperature that is comfortable to place over the ear. Cup onion over the affected ear for 15 minutes. Repeat as necessary to reduce pain and inflammation
Mullein Garlic Ear Oil
2-3 drops in each ear 4x/day or up to every 2 hours for 24-48 hours. Then 2-3x per day for another 5 days.

Daily Dosing
25 lb or less: 15 drops 2x/day
Up to 70 lb: 1/4 tsp 2x/day
Over 70 lb: 1/2 tsp 2x/day
Use acutely for a bad cough
25 lbs or less: 15 drops every 15 minutes for up to 4 doses.
Over 25lbs: 1/4 tsp every 15 minutes for up to 4 doses.
Young’s Rule: To determine dosing based on Age (for ages 2+ only)
Child dose = [the child’s age / (child’s age +12)] * adult dose.
For example: For a 5 year old child their dose would be: 5 /(5 +12) = 5/17 = 0.29 the adult dose.
The adult dose of Vit C is 500mg, so this means a 5 year old could take: 500mg * 0.29 = 145mg of Vitamin C
Giving powder & liquid supplements:
Most capsules can be opened. Add to foods like applesauce, yogurt or oatmeal. Sweet things hide well such as juice or juice concentrate, fruit purees, honey, maple syrup. Whatever it takes to hide them is fine! Just avoid warm to hot foods and liquids. Everything can be mixed together and taken at the same time unless otherwise instructed.
